Turkey to Get First F-35A On June 21

: May 24, 2018 - : 5:02 pm

Turkey will take delivery of its first next-generation F-35A fighter jet on June 21, marking the entrance of the fifth-generation fighter jet into the nation’s air force. The aircraft with the Turkish air force colours made its maiden flight in the USA recently.

A video shared by the US Department of Defence showed an F-35 with the tail number 18-001 and a Turkish flag next to it flying around the manufacturer Lockheed Martin facilities in Fort Worth, Texas recently. Turkey has ordered 100 aircraft – including, according to reports, F-35B short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) variants. Apart from Turkey, the US, the U.K., Italy, the Netherlands, Canada, Australia, Norway and Denmark are also present as participant members in the F-35 program.

Meanwhile, the United States continues its efforts aimed at discouraging Turkey from purchasing Russian-made S-400 air defence systems. “We continue to work to keep the Turks in a place where they don’t actually acquire the S-400. I believe that they have not yet and we are hopeful they will never take possession,” Pompeo said during testimony before the US House Foreign Affairs Committee,” US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in congressional testimony on May 23.

In mid-April, US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Wess Mitchell said Ankara’s purchase of the S-400 air defence missile systems from Russia could negatively affect the delivery of the F-35 fighter jets.
