Turkiye Strengthens Defence Ties with Indonesia

Our Bureau - : Aug 27, 2024 - : 11:33 pm

In a major step to enhance defence collaboration between Indonesia and Turkiye, Indonesian Defence Minister Prabowo Subianto and Haluk Görgün, Secretary of the Turkish Defence Industry Agency, along with senior executives from 12 Turkish defence firms, attended the signing of several agreements at the Indonesian Ministry of Defence in Jakarta on Monday (Aug. 26).

During the event, ASELSAN entered into strategic agreements with Indonesia covering the SARP Remote Controlled Stabilised Weapon System, CENK 4D Search Radar, Artillery Fire Control System, and Missile Data Link. Similarly, ROKETSAN signed agreements concerning the SUNGUR Air Defence Missile System, ÇAKIR Cruise Missile, and MAM-L Mini Smart Munition.

In addition to these agreements, key Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were also signed, focusing on unmanned surface vehicles, tank modernisation, and to establish missile production and Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities.

These developments followed the opening of a Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) branch office in Bandung, West Java, on Sunday (Aug. 25). TAI is set to collaborate with PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) on aerospace technology development, potentially including joint production of fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters.

Furthermore on Tuesday (Aug. 27), HAVELSAN’s CEO, Mehmet Akif Nacar, visited PTDI’s headquarters. This visit aimed to advance their agreement on developing Full Flight Simulators for PTDI-manufactured aircraft and ensure readiness for Indonesia’s needs in Airborne Warning & Control System (AWACS) aircraft.

In recent years, Turkiye’s FNSS and Indonesia’s PT PINDAD successfully collaborated on the production of the Harimau tank—a medium-weight tank designed to meet the operational requirements of the Indonesian armed forces. This joint project underscored the ability of the two countries to work together on complex defence manufacturing initiatives.

Additionally, Indonesia has signed contracts to purchase Turkish Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAV). These orders include the Baykar Bayraktar TB2 and the TAI Anka, which are expected to significantly enhance Indonesia’s aerial reconnaissance and combat capabilities.
