The United Arab Emirates (UAE) will partner with South Korea for the joint development of the MC-X, an upcoming military transport aircraft.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by Tawazun Council, the UAE defense and security acquisitions authority, and Korean Aerospace industries (KAI), during a meeting in Abu Dhabi on Monday between South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol and UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan.
At the meeting, South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) and Tawazun Council also signed another MoU for “strategic” defense industry cooperation. The agreement will help South Korea’s growing defence industry to expand its footprint in the UAE and the Middle East.
According to DAPA, the two countries will continue efforts for joint investment, research and technological development of weapons. The MoU is expected to boost South Korea’s efforts to export air defense systems, the agency added.
In recent years, defence cooperation between the two countries has seen significant growth. Last January, the UAE had signed an agreement to buy Cheongung II, a Korean mid-range surface-to-air missile (M-SAM) Block-2 defense system. The deal is worth US$3.5 billion. The country is the first international buyer of Cheongung II. Since 2017, the UAE has also been using Korean-made Chunmoo multiple-launch rocket systems.
