The Royal Thai Navy (RTN) has selected Navantia SA, SME, a Spanish state-owned shipbuilding company, to enhance the combat system capabilities of the HTMS Chang (LPD-792), a Type 071ET amphibious dock. The contract, valued at 909.5 million baht ($27.1 million), was awarded through a selection process and includes the procurement of advanced combat and surveillance systems.
The upgrade package will equip HTMS Chang with a Combat Management System (CMS), Surveillance System (Search Radar), Fire Control System (FCS), Weapon Systems, and a Gyro System, along with support equipment. The contract, which covers all associated costs, was formally announced on the Royal Thai Navy’s procurement website on 21 February 2025.
Navantia will supply its CATIZ CMS, a combat management system, along with its DORNA Fire Control System (FCS). The upgrade will also include two SENTINEL 30 Naval Remote-Controlled Weapon Stations (RCWS) from Spain's EM&E Group.
A second phase of upgrades, expected in fiscal year 2026, will likely see the installation of a 76mm naval gun, believed to be from the Leonardo 76/62 family produced by Italy’s Leonardo SpA, along with four decoy launchers.
HTMS Chang (LPD-792) is an amphibious landing craft in the Royal Thai Navy’s Amphibious and Combat Support Service Squadron (ACSSS). It is an export version of the Chinese Type 071 LPD, built by Shanghai Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Group (HZ), a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC). The vessel was delivered to the Royal Thai Navy in 2023.
This deal marks Navantia’s first major success with the Royal Thai Navy in 28 years, reinforcing Spain’s presence in Thailand’s naval modernisation efforts.
