The USS Pinckney (DDG 91) has successfully completed Flight Test Other 40 (FTX-40), also known as Stellar Banshee, which evaluated the Aegis Combat System's ability to detect, track, and engage a live hypersonic Medium-Range Ballistic Missile (MRBM) target. The test used a simulated SM-6 Block IAU missile.
Supported by the Missile Defense Agency, the United States Navy, Lockheed Martin, and industry partners, FTX-40 tested a hypersonic threat scenario and introduced a new target and simulated missile. The test marked the first use of the latest Aegis software in a virtualised configuration for a Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) flight test mission.
“Our Aegis Combat System successfully defended against a simulated hypersonic threat,” said Chandra Marshall, vice president of Multi-Domain Combat Solutions at Lockheed Martin. “Aegis Baseline 9’s hypersonic defence advantage against an MRBM target brings incredible capability that allows our warfighter to see the unseen, sooner, ensuring our sailors get in front of threats quickly.”
The test also demonstrated the Aegis Combat System’s ability to adapt to evolving defence needs. The system, which can be deployed in both sea-based and land-based configurations, is designed to offer flexibility and scalability in missile defence operations.
Lockheed Martin continues to collaborate with the Missile Defense Agency, the U.S. Navy, and industry partners on further flight tests to advance Aegis technology. The FTX-40 simulated engagement provides insights for future live-fire intercept missions and is the third test for the Capability Package 24 / Ballistic Missile Defense 5.1.5 system, which includes the Sea-Based Terminal Increment 3.
In a related test last year, teams conducted FTX-23, known as Stellar Sisyphus, which evaluated sensor-tracking and communications-link capabilities. This was followed by FTM-32, in which an MRBM target was intercepted using the SM-6 Dual II Software Upgrade interceptor missile.
