Our Bureau - : Jan 13, 2024 - : 3:25 pm

AirAsia has announced that the airline is opening a new route connecting Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia to Shanghai, People’s Republic of China (PRC). This new route will start operational on 20 February 2024 to become the airline’s sixth destination in the PRC from Kota Kinabalu, after Hangzhou, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Beijing, and Wuhan.

“We are thrilled to kick off the new year with this momentous announcement, especially for our guests in Sabah,” said Bo Lingam, Group CEO of AirAsia Aviation Group on Wednesday (Jan. 10). “Following the government’s visa-free entry initiative last year, this presents a significant opportunity to stimulate tourism between China and Malaysia.”

“China, being one of our largest markets, boasts a total of 19 routes from Malaysia, with a remarkable 162 weekly flights from February 2024 onwards. Beyond expanding our Kota Kinabalu hub, this new international route reinforces our standing as the largest foreign low-cost carrier in China,” he continued.

“We eagerly anticipate contributing substantially to the Sabah tourism sector as the state targets 2.8 million tourist arrivals in 2024.”

To celebrate the launching of the new route, AirAsia is offering promotional fares for guests to fly from Kota Kinabalu to Shanghai with all-in fares – excluding airport taxes, MAVCOM fee, fuel surcharges, and other applicable fees – from only MYR288 one-way. The promotional fares are available for booking until 21 January 2024 for the travel period between 20 February 2024 and 29 March 2024.

AirAsia’s AK 1516 flight will depart Kota Kinabalu at 21:00 to arrive in Shanghai at 02:00 three times a week every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. The airline’s AK 1517 flight will take off from Shanghai at 03:00 to arrive in Kota Kinabalu at 07:40 every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.

All times are UTC+8.
