With demand for air cargo down at least temporarily, Amazon Air is planning to sell excess space on its cargo planes, Bloomberg has reported.
According to the news agency, Amazon Air, which has a fleet of about 100 planes in the US and Europe, has hired executives that have experience marketing cargo space for airlines. Among the possibilities being considered are filling empty jets returning from Hawaii and Alaska with pineapples and salmon.
Amazon, which unveiled its air cargo service in 2016, operates out of smaller regional airports close to its warehouses around the country. The company has invested US$1.5 billion in a hub at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.
Demand for air cargo, which skyrocketed during the pandemic, slowed down in 2022 and according to IATA, is expected to tail off again this year. According to the airline trade group, the sector will generate sales worth US$149.4 billion, about US$52 billion less than 2022 but still US$48.6 billion more than in 2019.
