ANA, the Japanese airline group, has decided to consolidate Peach Aviation and Vanilla Air to form Japan’s largest low-cost carrier by 2020.
The move to merge the pair of budget carriers under its wings is a step to create a more robust organization which will be better positioned to compete in the growing Asian market.
At present, the two airlines specialize in flights to cities in Taiwan, South Korea and Southeast Asia, but the new merged entity, likely to bear the name Peach, is expected to reach destinations further afield, including India, the Nikkei Asian Review reported.
Since Peach has been managing many international flights to East Asia, the Peach name will be retained for developing the broader market.
Asian aviation demand is forecast to grow more than 5 per cent a year over the next two decades. Big budget carriers in the Asian-Pacific market, such as Australia’s Jetstar group and Malaysia’s AirAsia group, turn in annual sales equivalent to between 200 billion yen and 300 billion yen.
Through confronting cost and other issues, consolidating Peach and Vanilla will let ANA take on the international competition and tap more Asian demand.
Owing to the global shortage of pilots and airline maintenance crew members, jobs at both airlines will be maintained after the merger. Peach and Vanilla will also be able to share pilots since both fly Airbus A320 planes.
