The Philippines has received critical support from four ASEAN countries, with air assets arriving to assist in humanitarian and disaster response (HADR) operations following the extensive damage inflicted by Tropical Storm Kristine (Trami). Philippine authorities have declared a state of calamity across 158 areas in the affected regions, particularly in Northern Luzon, as recovery efforts ramp up.
On 26 October, a C-130 cargo aircraft from the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) and an EC725 transport helicopter from the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) were deployed to provide relief. The assistance continued with a C-295MW medium tactical transport aircraft from the Royal Brunei Air Force (RBAirF) arriving on 27 October, followed by an H225M and a Mil Mi-17 transport helicopters from the Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) on 28 October. These reinforcements have enabled crucial supply deliveries and supported evacuations in areas difficult to access due to storm damage.
Tropical Storm Kristine’s heavy rains led to landslides in Bato, Catanduanes, and severe flooding in Albay, with further impacts reported in Visayas, Mindanao, and parts of Luzon. Widespread flooding also affected Sorsogon, Catanduanes, and Northern Samar, displacing around 980,000 people from their homes and impacting more than 6.7 million residents nationwide. The Batangas Provincial Hospital in Lemery was forced to suspend admissions after floodwaters inundated its wards and emergency areas.
Authorities estimate the storm’s damage at PHP 4.05 billion (USD 82.28 million), with infrastructure losses around PHP 1.54 billion (USD 31.29 million) and agricultural losses projected to exceed PHP 2.51 billion (USD 50.99 million). Flooding persists across 663 areas, and power outages have affected 350 cities. The swift mobilisation of ASEAN resources underscores the importance of regional cooperation in addressing the severe impacts of natural disasters across Southeast Asia.
