The Czech Ministry of Defence has finalised a contract with Embraer for the acquisition of two C-390 Millennium transport aircraft, marking a significant step in updating the Czech Air Force’s transport capabilities. Designed to meet NATO standards, the new aircraft will support a variety of operations, including troop and equipment transport, medical evacuation, firefighting, disaster response, humanitarian assistance, and air-to-air refuelling.

Defence Minister Jana Černochová highlighted the importance of enhancing long-range transport capabilities: "Past and present history clearly shows us that the military needs to be able to transport people and heavier cargo over longer distances. Evacuations from Afghanistan and Sudan are clear evidence of this. I am therefore very pleased that we have managed to acquire aircraft for our Air Force that are capable of performing these tasks."

The contract is also expected to benefit the Czech aerospace sector through a substantial increase in production involvement. Embraer’s President and CEO, Bosco Da Costa Junior, noted the significance of the order: “This order from the Czech Republic, a NATO member, is an invaluable mark of confidence for Embraer. It encourages us to implement the best technology to provide our customers with the operational capabilities needed to accomplish the most demanding missions. With this order, Embraer will reinforce its ties with the local Czech aerospace industry, recognized for its expertise and product quality for decades.”

Alongside the aircraft, Embraer will supply the Czech Air Force with a training and support package to facilitate the C-390’s integration into its fleet. Known for its versatility, the C-390 has a maximum payload of 26 tonnes, a top speed of 470 knots, and advanced technology that supports its use on various terrains, including unpaved runways.

Globally, the C-390 fleet has accumulated over 15,000 flight hours, with mission capability rates of 93% and completion rates above 99%, underscoring its reliability. The Czech Republic joins other countries, including the Netherlands, Hungary, Portugal, Austria, Brazil, and South Korea, in selecting the C-390 for their defence forces.
