Insitu Showcases Integrator VTOL

At IMDEX 2023 in Singapore, Insitu is showing for the first time in Asia a new means of recovering and launching its Integrator UAV from both land and ship.

Simply called Integrator VTOL, it uses a quadcopter to haul a UAV high into the air before releasing it, and then stretching a rope into the air to recover it again after a mission.

The new solution makes far more practical sense than the traditional catapult and SkyHook that navies have used aboard vessels for both ScanEagles and Integrators.

Andrew Duggan, Managing Director of Brisbane-based Insitu Pacific, told Daily News that the complete system – including the ScanEagle/Integrator, winch mechanism, ground control station, rope and electric quadcopter-type UAV – fits on a standard aviation pallet.

Just one person can roll it out to a flight deck or any other suitable place on a ship for either a launch or recovery. It is far lighter than a pneumatic catapult and SkyHook, and it does not take up permanent space. It also only takes ten minutes to set up and also does not interfere in helicopter operations from a flight deck.

The system is automated, and the quadcopter built by Hood Tech can raise the recovery rope anywhere up to nearly 100 feet into the air.

Duggan said the system is equally suitable for land use, including from jungles or in urban canyons. It is already in use by an undisclosed customer who is using it with ScanEagles from land.
