Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), the parent company of Malaysia Airlines and Firefly, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with biofuel feedstock supplier FatHopes Energy (FHE) to examine the use of used cooking oil (UCO) as a feedstock for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production in Malaysia.
Under the agreement, FHE will provide technical and advisory support to MAG, ensuring that the collection, processing, and conversion of UCO into SAF comply with sustainability standards and regulatory requirements. The collaboration will assess the feasibility of scaling up SAF production, considering economic viability, environmental impact, and logistical factors.
Both companies will work with airports, fuel suppliers, and airlines to improve the efficiency of SAF production and explore its commercial potential. The partnership includes a review of airport infrastructure across MAG’s network to identify necessary upgrades for SAF deployment. This aligns with the Airports of Tomorrow project, launched by Airports Council International (ACI) World and the World Economic Forum (WEF) in 2023, which seeks to accelerate aviation decarbonisation and transition airports into energy hubs.
The initiative builds on FHE’s existing collaboration with Topsoe on developing a SAF refinery in Malaysia using UCO and other waste oils. These efforts aim to create a sustainable supply chain for SAF and support Malaysia’s broader environmental objectives in the aviation sector.
Vinesh Sinha, Chief Executive Officer of FHE, expressed the significance of the partnership: “Our collaboration with Malaysia Aviation Group is a major step forward in decarbonising the aviation industry, particularly in Malaysia. With this partnership, we look forward to advancing our shared vision of a more sustainable future for aviation.”
Philip See, Group Chief Sustainability Officer of MAG, added: “As a global aviation organisation committed to reducing the industry's carbon footprint, we continuously seek innovative solutions to minimise the environmental impact of our operations. Partnering with FatHopes to explore SAF production from UCO presents a valuable opportunity to contribute to the aviation industry’s broader sustainability goals. This collaboration represents a significant step toward making SAF more accessible and scalable across our global network.”
Aviation emissions accounted for an estimated 2% of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in 2022, with sector growth exceeding that of rail, road, and shipping. The agreement between FHE and MAG is part of ongoing efforts to advance SAF as a lower-carbon alternative to conventional jet fuel.
