The Philippine Navy (PN) is expecting to receive three Shaldag-class fast patrol boats made by Israeli Shipyards in the first quarter of 2022.
The delivery will be the first three from a total of eight patrol boats for which a contract was signed on May 12. As per the contract worth around PHP10 billion (US$503 million), the first batch of four boats will be built in Israel while the remaining boats will be built in PN’s shipyard in Cavite.
The procurement of Shaldag Mk.V patrol boats is the result of PN’s Fast Attack Interdictor Craft-Missile (FAIC-M) acquisition project meant to replace the already decommissioned Tomas Batilo-class patrol boats. The old boats were formerly South Korea Navy’s Chamsuri-class patrol boats first built in 1970’s.
While each of the 72-tons displacement Shaldag-class boats will be armed with a Rafael’s Typhoon MGS 30 mm cannon and two Mini Typhoon Remote Controlled Weapon Station (RCWS) with 12,7 mm machine guns, four of the boats will also be armed each with a Rafael’s Spike NLOS MLS missile station that contain 8 missiles. The Spike NLOS missile is a ground attack missile with tandem charge HEAT warhead and has 25 km maximum range.
As one of the archipelagic states in South East Asia region, the Philippines is currently in the process of modernizing its navy. Aside from the FAIC-M project, the Philippine Navy is also planning to buy up to three Scorpene-class attack submarines from France, six Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPVs) from Australia, and two additional Landing Platform Dock (LPD) from Indonesia, among others.
