PT DRU Lays Keels For Indonesian Navy’s Newest OPVs

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Nov 18, 2022 - : 5:31 pm

PT Daya Radar Utama (PT DRU), an Indonesian privately owned shipyard, laid keels for the Indonesian Navy’s two newest Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs). The event was held at the company’s facility in Lampung province, Sumatra island on Wednesday (Nov. 16)

Since the ships are being built under two different projects, it was believed that one is a 90-meters while the other is a 60-meters length class. However, it has recently been revealed that the two OPVs that PT DRU is building are of the same class albeit now lengthened to 98-meters. With this change, these ships will have more space to accommodate additional sensors and weapons as well as more fuel for longer range and endurance.

The design changes are likely the cause of the delay in these projects’ completion. It was previously reported that after the first steel cutting had been done in August 2021, these ships will be delivered to the Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL) in the first half of 2022. Following the keel laying ceremony this week, it is now expected that these ships will be completed and delivered to TNI-AL in the second half of next year.

While no further official details have been published regarding the specifications of these ships, it has been known that these ships will be powered by four 7280 KW diesel engines, enabling them to reach a maximum speed of 28 knots. PT DRU will also equip each ship with a hangar and a helipad to store and operate a medium-sized helicopter for transport and anti-submarine warfare.

Each of these new OPVs will also be manned by 70 personnel with an additional up to 24 troops stationed onboard.

Both ships will be equipped with naval radar Electronic Counter-Measures (ECM) systems from Elettronica of Italy. A 76 mm caliber naval main gun and a 35 mm caliber Millenium Gun Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) will also arm each of them. There is a possibility that these OPVs will be armed with Turkish-made Atmaca instead of Exocet anti-ship missiles although this is still open to change.
