The Royal Brunei Air Force (RBAirF) held a foundation-laying ceremony on Tuesday, 20th August, for a new building dedicated to its Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) Squadron. The event took place at Rimba Air Force Base, where the new facility will be constructed.

The building will cover a total area of 2,272 square metres and will include various facilities such as a lobby, offices, a filing room, a conference room, simulator rooms, a seminar room, storerooms, and workspace. The new UAS Squadron building is being constructed near the existing fire station at Rimba Air Force Base.

Construction of the facility began on 17th January 2024 as part of the 12th National Development Plan. The project is being managed by the main contractor, AL-C Sdn Bhd, and is scheduled for completion in March 2025.

It is understood that the new building will be equipped to store and maintain the Boeing Insitu RQ-21 Blackjack drones. The Royal Brunei Air Force received five of these drones from the United States in 2022 and has been using them to patrol and monitor the country’s maritime borders and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the South China Sea.
