Safran Vectronix is promoting its optronic devices at the ongoing show, with an eye towards emerging Japanese needs for high-end optronic devices for its military. Safran Vectronix has a presence in Japan for over 20 years with a local business partner. Speaking to Daily News, Christian Waschnig, Regional Director Sales & Marketing, Safran Vectronix, said Japan is an important customer as it prefers sophisticated and high-end equipment for its military. He said that sample units of the company’s Sterna + Moskito TI had been acquired by the Japanese self defence forces, for budget and testing purposes. Waschnig estimated a need for 100 Sterna + Moskito TI units to be acquired over a 2-year period, once a contract fructifies.
The Non-Magnetic Based Sterna + Moskito TI target acquisition system can operate 24/7, in virtually all terrain and weather conditions and provides True North capabilities. Sterna can operate in a GPS-denied environment and will not be disturbed, if used right next to a heavy armored vehicle. It can also operate in a hardened concrete environment, such as indoors in a heavy urban terrain. There are over 6,000 Sterna systems operational in the U.S. and a few thousand of them with European nations. Waschnig said efforts were also underway on selling and promoting the company’s optronic systems to South East Asian countries.
Another optronic system being promoted for the Japanese military is the company’s Moskito TI which combines a multitude of features in less than 1.3/1.4 kg. It requires only four CR123 batteries, while the larger Moskito TI+ relies on AA batteries. The Thermal Imagers are also offered with a modular GPS, which saves up to 1 kg of total weight. The Moskito TI and Moskito TI+ work reliably under the harshest conditions and provide infantry and special forces unmatched situational awareness at any time of day or night.
