Semi Conductor Devices (SCD) has launched the Sparrow HD, a mid-wave infrared (MWIR) sensor module aimed at improving detection and identification in defence and security applications. The new detector features a 5-micron pixel pitch, one of the smallest available, which enhances the resolution and clarity of infrared imaging.
SCD has built on its previous 5-micron technology, which was successfully implemented in the Crane detector, to develop the Sparrow HD. The device is designed for use in various defence systems, including handheld thermal imagers, unmanned aerial systems (UAS), and vehicle-mounted platforms. Its design prioritises optimisation in size, weight, and power (SWaP) efficiency, enabling greater performance in portable and integrated systems.
The Sparrow HD is available in two configurations: High Operating Temperature (HOT) XBn, which operates at 150K, and HOT Full-Mid-Wave (HFM). These options provide flexibility for integration into different tactical applications, such as multifunctional handheld thermal imagers, aerial gimbals, and remote weapon stations. Its mechanical configurations allow for both vertical and horizontal orientations to suit various system designs.
To meet the demands of large-scale production, the Sparrow HD is engineered for cost-effective manufacturing. It also includes interfaces such as MIPI CSI to facilitate integration with processors and systems utilising artificial intelligence (AI) at the edge. Additional optional features, such as video engine and image processing capabilities, are available to support high-resolution imaging and automated target recognition.
SCD has a long-standing presence in infrared technology, offering a range of cooled and uncooled detectors as well as laser diodes. The company works closely with global systems integrators to ensure its products meet the latest requirements for military and security applications.
