TUDM Eyes Kuwaiti F/A-18D Jets

A delegation from the Royal Malaysian Air Force (Tentera Udara Diraja Malaysia / TUDM) is reportedly set to engage in discussions with Kuwaiti authorities in June regarding the potential acquisition of F/A-18D aircraft from the Middle Eastern nation.

“TUDM still hopes to have the F/A-18D Hornet fighter aircraft despite the latest actions by the country which is forced to maintain and upgrade the existing Hornet aircraft due to the delivery of the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet fighter aircraft purchased by Kuwait in the face of delay,” said TUDM Commander, General Tan Sri Mohd Asghar Khan Goriman Khan on Saturday (May 11).

“During the visit, TUDM and the Malaysian government will determine the number of aircraft required,” he added.

Malaysia’s interest in procuring F/A-18D from Kuwait was made clear during the 2021 Dubai Airshow. Former leader of the Malaysian Air Force, General Tan Sri Ackbal Abdul Samad, revealed discussions with the Commander of the Kuwaiti Air Force (KAF) on this matter during the event.

However, uncertainties have arisen concerning the project, particularly since the KAF has opted to upgrade its existing fleet of F/A-18C/D due to delays in the delivery of F/A-18E/F Super Hornets.

TUDM currently operates eight F/A-18D Hornet dual-seater multirole fighter aircraft, in service since 1997. The procurement of aircraft from KAF is intended as an interim measure before the acquisition of the service’s new Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MRCA).
