Embraer has announced the sale of up to six A-29 Super Tucano aircraft to the Uruguayan Air Force (FAU). This agreement is part of a programme to renew Uruguay’s fleet and enhance its operational capabilities. The contract includes the immediate purchase of one aircraft, with an option for five additional units, and deliveries are expected to begin in 2025. The deal also covers mission equipment, logistics services, and a flight simulator.

Uruguay will become the sixth country in South America to use the A-29 Super Tucano, following Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Paraguay. The aircraft is widely employed across the region for tasks such as border surveillance, reconnaissance, and advanced pilot training.

Bosco da Costa Junior, President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security, stated, “We are honoured by the decision of the Uruguayan Air Force, another South American nation to choose the A-29 Super Tucano, an aircraft that is a reference in its segment in the international market. With this acquisition, Uruguay will have differentiated capabilities that will greatly contribute to the surveillance of its borders and increase FAU’s operational readiness.”

Uruguayan officials highlighted the strategic importance of this purchase. Foreign Minister Omar Paganini noted the enhancement of airspace surveillance capabilities, while Defence Minister Armando Castaingdebat pointed out the significant improvement in Uruguay’s defence capabilities. General Luis H. De León, Commander in Chief of the FAU, added that acquiring these aircraft would boost morale and satisfaction within the Air Force, especially since Uruguay has not acquired new combat aircraft since 1981.

Embraer’s A-29 Super Tucano is well-regarded globally, with over 260 orders and more than 570,000 flight hours, including 60,000 in combat. Its versatility, cost-effectiveness, and ability to operate in varied environments make it a preferred choice for many air forces. The aircraft is capable of numerous missions, ranging from close air support to advanced training, and is designed to function effectively in challenging conditions with minimal infrastructure. It also features low maintenance costs and high reliability, making it a practical option for air forces worldwide.
