Vaisala to Upgrade Weather Systems at 14 Indonesian Airports

: Aug 28, 2024 - : 11:09 pm

Vaisala has been awarded a EUR 25 million contract to enhance safety and weather resilience at 14 airports in Indonesia. The project, in collaboration with the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG), aims to modernise airport weather systems across the country, which is composed of over 17,000 islands and heavily relies on air travel.

The contract, the largest aviation weather project in Vaisala’s history, includes the installation of the AviMet Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS) at eight airports, and a wind shear alert system using X-band weather radars and wind lidars at four airports. Additionally, the project will incorporate the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s SILAM model, which helps predict the movement of ash clouds from volcanic eruptions. This is particularly important for Indonesia, which is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire and has about 80 active volcanoes.

Jarkko Sairanen, Executive Vice President for Weather and Environment at Vaisala, emphasised the importance of reliable weather systems for flight safety, especially in a country like Indonesia, where severe weather events can significantly impact passengers and ground staff. He stated, “Flight safety should not be a privilege. No matter where you live, you should be able to trust that your air travel is protected by modern automatic weather observation systems.”

The funding for this project will come from the Finnish Public Sector Investment Facility (PIF), managed by the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs. The project aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals for developing countries. The initiative is expected to commence in 2025, once the financing agreement is finalised, and will run for approximately three years.
