Fincantieri-built Italian Navy’s Frigate Federico Martinengo at Hamad Port

Our Bureau - : Mar 5, 2024 - : 12:01 am

Attracting attention at the Visiting Warships Display at Hamad Port in connection with DIMDEX 2024 is the Italian Navy’s Federico Martinengo, a Carlo Bergamini-class frigate built by Fincantieri. The vessel was the seventh of a series of 10 vessels of the FREMM multipurpose frigate program.

The Federico Martinengo, launched at the Fincantieri yard in Riva Trigoso in March 2017, was commissioned in April the next year. The frigate’s operational range is 6,800 nautical miles at 15 knots, with a complement of 200 people. Propelled by a CODLAG system, the vessel, which has a displacement at full load of approximately 6,700 tons, can reach speeds up to 27 knots. A technological marvel, the frigate, which has a length of 144.6 ft (44.1 m), and a beam of 19.7 ft (6.0 m), is equipped with Leonardo Kronos Grand Naval AESA radar, CAPTAS-4 towed-array sonar, UMS 4110 CL hull-mounted sonar and other advanced sensors. It also carries 16-cell MBDA SYLVER A50 VLS for Aster missiles, various guns, and anti-ship missiles. With its double hangar, it can carry two SH90 or one AW101 helicopter.

Another ship that is a part of the warships display is PNS Khalid (S-137), a diesel-electric fast-attack submarine of the Pakistan Navy. Commissioned in 1999, PNS Khalid has undergone significant upgrades, including in Turkey a few years ago. The submarine is now equipped with advanced torpedoes, naval mines, and strategic missile systems. PNS Tabuk, an offshore patrol vessel of the Pakistan Navy, has arrived at the port as well.

The eight warships that are at Hamad Port as part of the event also include QENS Damsah and cadet training ship Al Doha of the Qatar Emiri Naval Force (QENF), and one each from UK, Oman, and Russia.
