Hanwha Ocean Eyes Opportunities in Southeast Asia

Our Bureau - : Nov 7, 2023 - : 5:10 pm

Hanwha Ocean, which exported a 3,000-ton frigate to Thailand in 2019, is at the ongoing Show, hoping to build on the momentum generated by the speedy growth of the South Korean defence industry.

The company is showcasing its maritime defense assets, including a 2,000-ton export-type warship, a 3,000-ton frigate, the Jangbogo-III 3,000-ton submarine, and a future unmanned command and control vessel. The frigate it exported to Thailand was christened after the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, considered Thailand’s national father.

The Show is taking place against the backdrop of rising geopolitical tensions that have heightened security concerns across Southeast Asia. Like other exhibitors, Hanwha Ocean, formerly Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, senses an opportunity to expand its market share in the region where countries have mounting security needs. During the course of the Show, company officials will take part in discussions with defence officials from nations such as the Philippines, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Malaysia, specifically targeting submarine exports.

The company has reportedly offered to build submarines to Canada, the Philippines and Poland. Canada is eyeing new submarines and has expressed interest in what Hanwha Ocean has to offer. Hanwha Ocean, which has built submarines for the South Korean and Indonesian navies, has expressed interest in Poland’s project to acquire three submarines and answered queries from the country on its submarine building capabilities. The company is hoping that the Philippines, which currently does not have a submarine fleet. will pick it over competitors to build two submarines over the 2,000-tonne level.
