Indonesian Air Force to Acquire Bayraktar TB2 Drones

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Aug 5, 2024 - : 8:52 pm

The Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) is set to procure Bayraktar TB2 combat drones from Turkiye, according to a recent announcement by Marshal Mohammad Tonny Harjono, the Chief of the Indonesian Air Force.

“We will buy the Bayraktar type 2. This Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) has a MALE (medium-altitude long-endurance) capability with LOS (line of sight) and BLOS (beyond line of sight) capability,” Harjono stated in Jakarta, as quoted by Antara news agency on Thursday, 1st August.

Harjono noted that the acquisition of the Baykar-manufactured drones would bolster the TNI AU’s existing fleet, which currently includes primarily Chinese-made CH-4B Rainbow drones. Additionally, the Indonesian Air Force is expecting the arrival of six Anka drones from Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), part of an order for 12 units signed in 2023 for the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI).

Although Harjono did not disclose the exact number of TB2 drones to be purchased, the decision followed his visit to Baykar Technology in Turkey last June. Baykar Technology, the developer and manufacturer of the TB2, produces a variety of UAVs for both the Turkish armed forces and export markets.

During the visit, the Indonesian Air Force also expressed interest in Baykar’s Akinci high-altitude long-endurance (HALE) drone. However, it remains uncertain whether this interest will lead to a firm contract.

The Bayraktar TB2 gained international recognition during the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia, where it significantly contributed to Azerbaijan’s victory. The drone has also demonstrated its effectiveness against Russian forces in the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war, particularly in the early stages of the conflict in 2022.

It must be noted, however, that the drone’s operation and effectiveness in the Russo-Ukrainian war has gradually declined due to the improvement in Russia’s tactics, and anti-drone countermeasures.
