Kenya to Purchase 118 Katmerciler HIZIR from Turkey

: Jan 28, 2021 - : 3:01 pm

Kenya’s Department of Defence has approved the procurement of 118 HIZIR armored personnel carriers from Turkey at a price of nearly US$70 million.

“The Kenyan Army made a critical assessment and established that the contemporary operating environment has evolved significantly with major threats to the APCs being Vehicle Borne IEDs (VBIEDs), directional Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), and IEDs reinforced with complex ambushes,”  Kenya Defence Forces Spokeswoman Col Zipporah Kioko told The Star newspaper.

“From a pool of three firms that had applied to supply Kenyans with the APCs, only Turkish company Katmerciler HIZIR met all the requirements, beating two other contenders from South Africa and North America,” Kioko added.

HIZIR is a 4×4 Tactical Wheeled Armoured Vehicle designed and optimised for high performance under extreme operational conditions. Fully designed and manufactured by the Turkish company “Katmerciler AŞ”, HIZIR was launched in November 2016 at the 3rd High-Tech Port expo of Turkey’s Independent Industrialists’ and Businessmen’s Association (MUSIAD). It was tested in the Netherlands and certified by NATO.

The vehicle is integrated with Aselsan‘s high-tech reconnaissance. surveillance systems and environmental monitoring radar. It can be used in various configurations such as combat vehicle, command, and control vehicle, CBRN vehicle, weapon carrier (easy integration of various weapon systems), ambulance vehicle, border security vehicle, and reconnaissance vehicle.

The Katmerciler HIZIR is a 5570 mm length, 2490 width, and 2610m height. It can carry a total of 9 personnel with the driver and commander at the front and 7 personnel at the rear on individual seats.

Depending on the operational requirements, HIZIR can be equipped with a 12.7mm machine gun, 40mm automatic grenade launcher, or 7.62mm machine gun. The vehicle provides many advantages such as Fire-on-the-move capability, Day and night imaging, automatic target tracking, Laser Range Finder for accurate ballistics, Last round warning, and Manual back-up.

According to Kioko, the purchase is part of Kenya’s plans to  ensure the protection of its troops as they tackle the Somali-based al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Shabaab militants that have been targeting security officers patrolling the Kenya-Somali border.
