The 16th edition of the Langkawi International Maritime & Aerospace Exhibition LIMA will provide a gateway to defence companies looking to meet the requirements of Malaysia’s military modernisation needs and indeed those of the region. The biennial event is one of the largest maritime and aerospace exhibitions in the Asia-Pacific region.
The latest edition of the show returns to Langkawi after a three year gap, as the 2021 edition of the show was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Langkawi International Maritime & Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) is unique in supporting both military aviation and maritime defence and has come a long way since it first began in 1991.
The organisers expect over 600 companies to take part in the latest edition of the show with up to 20 international pavilions from the US, China, UK, France, UAE, Indonesia, Thailand, Italy, Türkiye, Brazil, Germany, Singapore, South Korea, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, Belgium, Czech Republic and others. Indonesia, China, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates and Russia also sending aerobatic display teams to participate.
A sizeable number of trade visitors from all over the world are also making a beeline for Langkawi. It is expected that the defence sector will feature 60% of participating companies, while the commercial sector will have a participation of 40%. The exhibition is being held at Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre (MIEC) and Resort World Langkawi (RWL) for is airborne and maritime components respectively. In addition to meeting the requirements for military modernisation in the region, there is now also the opportunity for other nations to displace Russia’s position as an important arms supplier to the region as supplies of weapons and spares have been disrupted by its ongoing conflict with Ukraine. Malaysia is one of the countries affected, with serviceability of her Russian origin military assets thought to have been impacted.
