Yulian Ardiansyah - : Apr 18, 2024 - : 10:35 pm

The ongoing eruption of Mount Ruang in the Siau Islands regency, North Sulawesi, Indonesia has caused significant disruptions to air travel, affecting flights to and from East Malaysia and Brunei operated by at least two airlines.

Batik Air, in an announcement made on Thursday (Apr. 18), disclosed the cancellation of flights to and from Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Tawau, and Sibu. The airline has not yet provided information regarding the resumption of these routes.

Concurrently, AirAsia also declared on April 18 the cancellation of flights to and from Labuan and Brunei. An earlier statement published on the airline’s website on the same day stated that the affected routes would resume on April 19 at 8:00 a.m.

Apr. 19 Update: AirAsia has announced that the airline is cancelling flights to and from Miri, Kota Kinabalu, Tawau, Johor Bahru, Kuching, Sandakan, Penang and Bintulu until further notice. There has yet any announcement regarding when these routes will be open again.

In addition to the grounded flights, the Sam Ratulangi International Airport in Manado, North Sulawesi has been temporarily shut down. Situated approximately 100 km southwest of Mount Ruang, the airport has received ashfall which compelled airport authorities to halt flight operations until further notice.

Mount Ruang, located in Indonesia, erupted on Wednesday (Apr. 17), ejecting volcanic materials to a height of 3,000 metres from its peak. The Indonesian Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry’s Geology Agency is currently monitoring several other volcanoes in the vicinity of Mount Ruang due to heightened seismic activity in those areas.
