NORINCO (China Northern Industrial Corporation) is setting its sights on increasing its market share in the region, backed by growing Chinese export successes and strong Government support. NORINCO’s VT4 MBT has found several export customers including the Royal Thai Army, Pakistan Army and Nigerian Army and the company is keen for additional orders for the MBT.
The company’s VT4 main battle tanks and VT5 light tanks, are mature products in international markets. Also known as the MBT3000, the VT4 is a made-for-export MBT, which made its public debut in 2014. The Royal Thai Army is thought to have more than 50 VT4 MBTs in service. Pakistan’s VT4 MBTs were displayed at the Pakistan Day military parade in Islamabad for the first time in March 2021.
The VT4 is equipped with a 125 mm smoothbore gun, which can engage targets with armour-piercing fin-stabilized discarding-sabot (APFSDS) or high explosive anti-tank cartridges out to ranges of 5km. The MBT is equipped with a stabilized fire control including cooled thermal imager sights for commander and gunner. It is also fitted with roof-mounted panoramic sights and a digital fire control system. The VT4 features a Chinese 1200 HP diesel engine and can travel at a maximum speed of 70 kph and a maximum cross-country speed of 50 kph.
A Self-Propelled Howitzer (SPH) has also been independently developed by Harbin First Machinery Group Corp, which comes under NORINCO. The new SPH is planned for induction with the Chinese military and has completed multiple rounds of testing by national certification organizations and several rounds of test demonstrations and trials by the military.
NORINCO’s VN22 6 x 6 wheeled armored vehicle is one of its newer products. The armoured vehicle can survive a blast of 10 kilograms TNT and can be used for counter-terrorism and peacekeeping missions, in addition to patrol and reconnaissance duties. NORINCO also produces the VN1, VN2 and VN4 wheeled armored vehicles and VP11 mine detection vehicle.
NORINCO is the main supplier of Chinese Army weaponry and equipment for land forces. Norinco Group’s 2020 revenues stood at USD 75 billion. NORINCO manufactures main battle tanks (MBT) and armored vehicles, unmanned ground vehicles (UGV), anti-missile, air defence systems, and intelligent ammunition.
