Orizzonte Sistemi Navali (OSN), a joint venture between Fincantieri (51%) and Leonardo (49%), has received notification from the Italian Navy regarding its decision to proceed with the construction of the fourth vessel in the Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) programme, alongside the associated logistical support. The total value of this latest contract is approximately EUR 236 million.
In the coming days, OSN will finalise sub-contracts with Fincantieri and Leonardo, with respective values of around EUR 163 million and EUR 70 million. The contract with Fincantieri is classified as a significant related-party transaction, while Leonardo’s sub-contract is considered a related-party transaction of lesser importance. Both transactions comply with the relevant regulations and are exempt from the procedural regime for related-party transactions, in accordance with current rules and adopted procedures.
The OPV programme aims to modernise and renew the Italian Navy’s fleet, enhancing capabilities for presence and surveillance, maritime patrolling, merchant traffic control, protection of communication lines and the exclusive economic zone, as well as responding to marine pollution threats.
The new patrol vessels, measuring approximately 95 metres in length with a displacement of 2,300 tonnes and accommodation for 97 crew members, will be constructed at Fincantieri’s Riva Trigoso and Muggiano Integrated Shipyard. They will feature advanced technological solutions and high standards of automation and manoeuvrability, suitable for diverse tactical scenarios and weather conditions.
A notable innovation is the naval cockpit, developed for the Multipurpose Offshore Patrol Vessels (PPAs). This integrated workstation, co-produced by Leonardo and Fincantieri NexTech, allows ship and airborne operations to be managed by just two operators—the pilot and co-pilot—who also take on the roles of the bridge watch officer and captain. This command bridge station enables control of the ship’s machinery, rudders, platform systems, and certain combat system functions.
