Semi Conductor Devices (SCD) has secured an order for hundreds of its Crane Mid-Wave Infrared (MWIR) detectors from a leading systems integrator. The detectors will be used in missile warning systems (MWS) for airborne platforms.
The Crane is described as the first MWIR detector with a 5-megapixel resolution in a 2560×2048 format and a 5µm pixel pitch. It is based on SCD’s XBn technology and Hot Full Midwave (HFM), operating at either 150K or 120K to provide high image quality while maintaining a compact size, weight, and power consumption.
Designed for self-protection suites, the Crane offers high sensitivity with low readout noise, low dark current, and high quantum efficiency, enhancing detection and identification capabilities. It can achieve frame rates of up to 140 Hz in full-frame mode, ensuring smooth imaging for tracking fast-moving threats. Its compact integrated detector dewar cooler assembly (IDDCA) allows for easier integration into airborne platforms.
"This order underscores the growing demand for advanced MWIR technology in airborne self-protection systems," said Shai Fishbein, VP of Business Development & Marketing at SCD. "The Crane's unique combination of high resolution and low SWaP characteristics enables our customers to achieve superior threat detection and tracking capabilities. This significantly enhances aircraft survivability by providing unparalleled situational awareness and early threat detection, allowing aircrews to respond with greater precision and effectiveness in complex operational environments. As global threats are constantly increasing, our leading IR solutions, ranging from high-end to mass distribution units, are drawing significant interest worldwide."
SCD develops a range of cooled and uncooled infrared detectors and laser diodes, supplying IR seekers, thermal imagers, smart munitions, night vision systems, and other applications. The company collaborates with major defence and technology firms globally, offering both standard and custom-designed detectors covering the near-infrared (NIR), short-wave (SWIR), mid-wave (MWIR), and long-wave infrared (LWIR) spectrums.
