The U.S. State Department has approved a USD55 million Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to the Government of Singapore consisting of Tail Kits for the air-launched Joint Direct-Attack Munition (JDAM), Computer Control and Air Foil Groups for GBU-12 Paveway II Laser Guided Bombs.

In a press release published on Thursday (Feb 9), the FMS which the Raytheon Missile and Defense will handle as the principal contractor includes:

100 KMU-556 Tail Kits for JDAM GBU-31;
900 KMU-572 Tail Kits for JDAM GBU-38;
250 MAU-169 Computer Control Group for GBU-12, and;
250 MXU-650 Air Foil Group for GBU-12.

The proposed sale will also include DSU-38 laser guidance sets, Common Munitions Built-In-Test (BIT)/Reprogramming Equipment (CMBRE), spare parts, unclassified software, and publications, as well as other related supports.

All of these items will be received by the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) to support the service’s operational and Singapore’s national defense requirements.

The JDAM GBU-31 is a 2,000 lb (907 kg) Mk-84 general-purpose bomb fitted with the KMU-556 kit giving it a precision strike capability. With the kit’s inertial and GPS guidance system, the GBU-31 has an officially published maximum range of 28 km.

Operationally similar to GBU-31, the GBU-38 is a 500 lb (227 kg) Mk-82 general-purpose bomb installed with a KMU-572 kit. This is a “lightweight” version that is also capable to be carried by the MQ-9B Reaper Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle (UCAV).

The GBU-12 Paveway-II is a laser-guided air-dropped bomb based on the Mk-82. It has an effective range of 14.8 km.

In the Southeast Asia region other than Singapore, the JDAM in various versions has also been exported to Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand.
