Vietnam Strongly Supports SAF, Says Boeing

Vietnam is one of the countries that have made early investments in developing sustainable aviation fuel and there is an intra-industry partnership in moving the aviation sector towards carbon neutral, said Thomas Sanderson, Product Marketing Director at Boeing.

“We see close cooperation between the government, airlines and air-framers in taking the aviation sector towards the desired outcome of further reducing emissions, which is very encouraging,” Sanderson said on the sidelines of the ongoing VIAexpo in Hanoi.

Boeing, he said, supports the commercial aviation industry’s ambition to achieve net-zero carbon emissions for global civil aviation operations by 2050, and has established a goal that current and future commercial aircraft will be 100 per cent SAF capable by 2030. “We are also actively partnering with governments and customers to understand and support their future requirements,” Sanderson added.

In the next 20 years, Boeing forecasts that approximately half of passenger jet deliveries will replace today’s models, improving the global fleet’s fuel efficiency and sustainability. “Our current production will represent the most carbon efficient aircraft available in the industry,” he asserted.

Boeing has also identified possible options such as fleet innovation, operational efficiency, renewable energy and advanced technology. However, this transition takes time and requires the use of certified and sustainable carbon offsetting methods, he added.

With the fleet renewal, each new generation of aircraft can reduce fuel consumption and emissions by an additional 15 per cent to 25 per cent.
Stating that South East Asia is the fastest growing market, he said he expects the trend to continue. “In the next 20 years we see a demand for more than 4200 new aircraft in the region and Vietnam will be an integral part of it as the country is poised toward progressive growth in commercial aviation,” Sanderson said.
