The latest stealth warship for the Indian Navy, Y-3023 Dunagiri, a Project 17A Frigate being built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders Limited (GRSE), was recently launched in Kolkata. ‘Dunagiri’ is the fourth ship of P17A Frigates.
A follow-on class to the P17 (Shivalik Class) Frigates, a total of seven P17A Frigates are now in various stages of construction at Mazagaon Dock Limited (MDL) and GRSE.
The first two P17A Project ships were launched in 2019 and 2020 at MDL and GRSE respectively. MDL launched the third ship (Udaygiri) in May.
The Indian Navy’s Directorate of Naval Design (DND) has designed the P17A warships which feature improved stealth capability, advanced weapons and sensors, and platform management systems.
The Dunagiri project generated more than 3000 local employment opportunities and featured participation from 29 Indian OEMs along with MSMEs across the country.
