Our Bureau - : Nov 1, 2022 - : 9:20 pm

Indonesia’s state-owned enterprise, PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) also known as Indonesian Aerospace (IAe) is one of the largest aerospace firms in the Southeast Asia region. PTDI is showcasing its aerospace prowess at the ongoing show with scale models of its N219 Amphibious version, N219, CN235-220, NC212i, KFX/IFX and Medium Altitude Long Endurance Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (MALE UAV) Elang Hitam. In an exclusive interview to Atul Chandra, Irlan Budiman, PTDI Corporate Secretary provides insights into ongoing programmes at the Indonesian airframer.
Edited Excerpts from the Interview.

  1. Please elaborate on PTDI’s role in the IF-X 5th generation fighter programme and present status?
Starting from 2011, PTDI has been actively involved in the development of a multi role combat aircraft with Republic of Indonesia Government and Republic of Korea Government. Under the supervision of our Ministry of Defence, the programme aims to build Indonesian capabilities to defend its air territory, to establish and enhance a sustainable Indonesian Defense industry and deliver fighters to the Indonesian Air Forces.

PTDI as the Indonesian Industrial Participant (IIP) is participating in the Engineering Work Package (EWP) as part of the Engineering & Manufacturing Development (EMD) activities carried out at PTDI facility, in the form of analysis and design for the KFX/IFX structure with direct supervision of the Korean Aerospace Industry (KAI) senior engineers. This work was completed in September 2022. PTDI is also participating in the Aircraft Component Manufacturing (ACM) prototype component production Activities. This work is being carried out at PTDI and is specifically related to some of the metal components of the aircraft’s wing and tail. PTDI is also producing pylon components for prototype aircraft 1 to 6. The ACM phase is planned to be completed by the end of this year. PTDI engineers have already been dispatched to KAI in Sacheon to participate in the aircraft engineering and manufacturing development.

  1. Please elaborate on the domestic and export market for the CN-235?
We expect sustained demand for the CN-235 aircraft, which is well proven in the region. In the Indonesian domestic market, we expect demand for two aircraft for the Indonesian Navy and three more aircraft for the Indonesian Armed Forces. In the export market as well, we are confident of demand. Potential customers could include the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) for military transport and VIP versions. Nigerian customers are interested in the CN-235s military and commercial variants. The Bangladesh Air Force and Bangladesh Army are also potential customers.

  1. Is PTDI working on any unmanned systems?
PTDI has been developing an unmanned aerial vehicle named Wulung. It uses composite materials and powered by pusher type single piston engine, equipped with single Ground Control Station as central control. The Wulung has the capability to perform ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance). Besides, PTDI in cooperation with a consortium of five other institution are now developing UAV Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) named Elang Hitam. The consortium consisted of the Indonesian Ministry of Defence (MoD), the TNI-AU, state-owned aerospace company PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI), national defence electronics company PT Len Industri, the National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN), the Indonesian Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT), and the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). The first prototype of the Elang Hitam was implemented at PTDI’s facilities in Bandung on 30 December 2019, and plans were subsequently made to test various indigenously developed weapons and UAV control systems on the platform and its successive prototypes.
