The Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL) officiated the steel-cutting of its second Bung Karno-class corvette in Batam on Thursday (Jan. 25). Built by PT Karimun Anugrah Sejati shipyard, this ship will likely serve in a slightly different role than the KRI Bung Karno which was launched in April 2023.
Named after Indonesia’s first president and proclamator, the KRI Bung Karno (369) was designed and built as a combat-capable presidential yacht of the Indonesian Navy. Also known as a “VVIP and Presidential Helicopter-carrying Guided-missile Corvette” in TNI-AL, it is the first purpose-built Indonesian warship to incorporate bulletproof VVIP cabins. The ship can also serve as a command ship in an emergency.
The second Bung Karno-class corvette is likely projected to function primarily as a surface combatant. It remains to be seen whether the second ship will also be configured with a VVIP configuration to enable it to serve a secondary role as a VVIP transport.
The Bung Karno-class corvette has a 650-ton displacement, 73 m length, and a 12 m beam. Powered by two diesel engines delivering 4,000 kW of power, it has a maximum speed of 24 knots. Crewed by 55 personnel, there’s also a helipad capable of handling a medium-sized helicopter.
Different from the KRI Bung Karno (369) which is rather modestly armed with a 40 mm caliber main gun, two 20 mm cannons, and a pair of twin SIMBAD SAM (Surface to Air Missile) launchers, the second Bung Karno-class corvette is being planned to be fitted with a 76 mm main gun, four anti-ship missiles in 2x2 launcher configuration, and two sets of SAM launchers.
The ship is expected to be launched by the end of this year.
