The Philippines has submitted to Israel a new shopping list for defence systems. Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) is reportedly in discussions with Philippine officials for aerial and coastal defence systems.
Tensions between China and the Philippines have sharply escalated in recent months over territorial disputes in the South China Sea, a situation that could draw in the United States.
According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute's (SIPRI), the Philippines ranks high among countries that have purchased Israeli weapon systems; in recent years, the country was responsible for 12 % of the total Israeli exports of defence systems. This makes the Philippines one of the "top three" countries that purchase weapons from Israel. India accounts for 37%, Philippines 12%, and the U.S. (.7%.
Philippines' most recent contract of a system made by an Israeli company was the Rafael Spyder air defence system. The first two batteries arrived in September 2023, and the final battery is expected to arrive later this year.
The Spyder system is designed to provide multi-layered air defence and can protect against a range of aerial threats, such as combat aircraft, attack helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), ballistic and cruise missiles, guided munitions, and rockets. Because of these flexible capabilities, the Philippines can better defend against aerial strikes against its soldiers, land-based assets, mobile units, and critical infrastructure.
The planned integration of the Spyder system during Balikatan 2024 is a significant step toward the Philippines' enhanced air defence capabilities. The development strengthens the United States' national security posture in the region and advances military cooperation with it.
Last year Israeli company Elbit Systems was contracted to supply two long-range maritime patrol aircraft based on the ATR-72-600, equipped with advanced intelligence systems. The purchase is part of the Philippine Army’s long-term modernization program
The Philippine Navy recently acquired two new missile-capable Shaldag Mk. V patrol boats made by the Israeli Shipyards. In 2021, the Philippines army began receiving the SPH ATMOS 155mm/52cal artillery systems made by Elbit. The Philippines also operates VTOL UAV supplied by Flying Production, a subsidiary of Elbit.
Manila is currently modernizing the capabilities of the Philippine Armed Forces. The project is now focused on obtaining defence hardware, including as multirole aircraft, missile systems, and submarines. According to Israeli defence sources, Manila wants more Israeli defence systems – not just sensors but weapon systems like missiles of different types. The country wants to acquire long range radars, and very advanced command and control systems that enable full coordination between different units on the ground, air and sea.
