Indra has launched the European SMAUG (Smart Maritime and Underwater Guardian) research and development project, aimed at enhancing security at ports and their entry routes. The initiative is part of the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme and involves a consortium of 22 entities from seven European countries.
With more than 80% of global trade conducted by sea, ports play a crucial role in international commerce. The constant movement of vessels necessitates effective security measures to monitor legal and illegal activities at ports, coastal areas, and borders. Additionally, geopolitical tensions have increased the need for enhanced underwater security.
The SMAUG project seeks to improve the detection, tracking, and monitoring of potential threats and illicit trafficking in EU waters. It integrates Indra’s iSIM solution, which combines security management with advanced underwater detection and surveillance systems.
Underwater threats are identified using four main methods. Acoustic detection relies on hydrophones to capture sounds from small autonomous underwater vehicles. Sonar scanning is used to inspect ship hulls and the seabed. High-resolution sonar enables detailed examination of objects in low-visibility conditions. A swarm of autonomous underwater vehicles also operates collectively to locate potential threats.
These detection systems, supported by artificial intelligence, enhance the identification of unlawful goods and security threats concealed beneath the water’s surface. The project is also designed to improve the protection of maritime infrastructure and vessels, including the detection of suspected narco-submarines and other illicit activities.
Indra leads the project with its expertise in processing underwater sound and images, applying artificial intelligence for early threat detection, and providing security solutions for port infrastructure and maritime transport. The company’s iSIM system integrates data from hydrophones, underwater scanners, drone swarms, autonomous vehicles, satellite surveillance, and port management systems to support real-time security decisions.
Juan Román Martínez, head of Indra’s SMAUG project, stated: “This project means significant progress in maritime security, as it reinforces safety and promotes international cooperation in the fight against illicit activities in the maritime environment.”
The SMAUG project has a budget of nearly six million euros and includes partners such as universities, research centres, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), law enforcement agencies, public authorities, and coast and border guards from Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Norway, and Spain.
The project is also being developed for interoperability with the Common Information Sharing Environment (CISE) to facilitate data exchange between EU and European Economic Area (EEA) surveillance systems. This would allow authorities across different sectors to access classified and unclassified information relevant to maritime security operations.
