Japan’s Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) have placed an order for 17 CH-47JA Block II Chinook Extended Range helicopters to replace some of its CH-47J/A aircraft. The helicopters will be produced jointly by Boeing and Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI).
Boeing and KHI have been supplying Chinook helicopters to the JSDF since the 1980s, with over 100 delivered to date. The collaboration is one of Japan’s longest-running license manufacturing programmes.
“This award strengthens our decades-long relationship with KHI and provides critical capability improvements that will keep the Japan Self-Defense Forces operating heavy-lift aircraft for decades to come,” said Heather McBryan, vice president and program manager, Boeing Cargo Programs. “The Block II configuration and digital flight controls will modernize and significantly improve Japan’s helicopter transport capabilities by improving aircraft stability, safety, and efficiency.”
The CH-47JA Block II Chinook Extended Range is an upgraded heavy-lift helicopter equipped with an advanced digital cockpit, a reinforced airframe, and enhanced fuel tanks. These improvements are designed to increase performance and ensure compatibility with other upgraded Chinooks in service worldwide. The updated design and avionics architecture allow for future technological enhancements and expanded operational capabilities.
With this order, Japan becomes the fourth country to acquire the Block II Chinook, joining the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany.
