The Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force’s (PLAAF) August 1st aerobatics team is returning to Langkawi with indigenously developed J-10C fighter jets. The display team is performing formation displays with eight aircraft at the ongoing airshow. According to PLAAF spokesperson Xie Peng, this is aerobatic team’s first performance outside China since it has converted to the J-10C.

The August 1st aerobatics team earlier flew the J-10A and J-10S, which is the twin-seat trainer version of the J-10A. These aircraft were in service with the display team since 2009. The new J-10Cs are easier to maintain and operate than the August 1st aerobatics team’s earlier J-10As. The induction of the J-10C also allows the PLAAF to rotate pilots from its operational squadrons with the type for a tours with the August 1st aerobatics team.

The J-10C is manufactured by the Aviation Industry Corp of China and was first shown in public in July 2017 and entered combat patrol duty with the PLAAF in April 2018. The supersonic, multipurpose fighter is capable of maintaining short- and medium-range air supremacy, and can strike both ground and sea targets. The new aircraft has an upgraded Chinese active phased array radar with better detection and multitargeting capability. The aircraft also has a smaller radar signature than the J-10A or J-10B and uses a more powerful engine. Operational J-10C’s with the PLAAF are also armed with China’s newest air-to-air missiles, which can engage targets at longer ranges.

The PLAAF’s August 1st team was founded in 1962 as the Chinese military’s first aerial display team and was named after the People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) founding date. Since 1962, the display team has performed at over 700 air shows, showcasing their manoeuvres to over 700 delegations from more than 170 countries and regions.
