The Royal Thai Army (RTA) recently received a delivery of ten additional M1126 Stryker Infantry Carrier Vehicle (ICV) at Laem Chabang port, Chonburi, Eastern Thailand. After inspection, these vehicles will be delivered to RTA’s 11th Infantry Division based in Chachoengsao province.
Between 2019 to 2020, the RTA ordered 120 M1126 Stryker ICVs from the United States Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), with ten more ordered in 2021. The initial plan was to acquire 37 of the vehicle of which additional 23 units were given by the United States for free, bringing the number to 60. With this latest delivery, the RTA now has 130 M1126 in its inventory.
The total cost of the acquisition is about THB9.1 billion or around USD255.8 million.
The M1126 Stryker ICV is a version of the Stryker family of vehicles that were developed from the Canadian LAV III. It has a capacity of two crews and nine fully armed troops inside its compartment with all-around armor protection capable to withstand hits from 14.5 mm caliber projectiles. With a dimension of 6.95 meters in length, 2.72 meters in width, and a height of 2.64 meters, it has a weight of about 16.47 tonnes.
Powered with a diesel engine delivering 260 kW (350 hp) of power to drive its eight wheels, the vehicle is capable of reaching a maximum speed of about 100 km/h on paved road, and with a maximum range of about 180 km.
The M1126 can be armed with either a 12.7 mm Heavy Machine Gun (HMG), or a 40 mm automatic grenade launcher mounted in a Protector Remote Weapon Station (RWS) as its main weapon, while also able to be mounted with either a 12.7 mm HMG, or a 7.62 mm caliber machine gun as its secondary armament.
Thailand is the only country in Southeast Asia that operates the M1126 Stryker ICV.
