The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) officially received the first Tun Fatimah-class Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) at Pulau Indah, Port Klang, Tuesday (Jan. 2). Launched in October 2022, the ship underwent a series of tests and equipment fitting by the Malaysian company, THHE-Destini as the builder before being delivered to the agency.
The yet-unnamed ship is the first of three Tun Fatimah-class ships for the MMEA build in Malaysia with the assistance of the Netherlands’s Damen shipyard. The Malaysian government awarded an RM738.9 million (approx. USD160.5 million) contract for these ships to the THHE-Destini in 2017.
The Tun Fatimah-class ship is developed based on Damen’s 1800-class OPV design. With a dimension of 83 meters in length, 13.7 meters beam, and 3.75 meters draft, the design has a displacement of around 1,890 tonnes. Powered with four MTU diesel engines, it can reach a maximum speed of 21 knots and a maximum range of about 5,000 nautical miles.
Armed with a 30 mm Aselsan SMASH cannon as its main gun, this newest MMEA ship also has a helipad and a hangar to store and operate a medium-sized helicopter up to 11 tons in weight. The ship has a complement of 46 personnel and has enough provision for up to 21 days of endurance.
While no set date has been confirmed, it is expected that the ship will soon sail to the MMEA port in Kuching, Sarawak, East Malaysia where it will be officially named.
