Germany to Donate Four Additional Drones to PCG

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Jan 16, 2024 - : 7:13 pm

Following the donation of two drones to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) from Germany in 2022, the European country will donate four more to further strengthen cooperation between these two countries.

This was revealed during a courtesy visit of the German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock to the PCG headquarters in Manila last week on Thursday (Jan. 11).

“We talk broadly about three things. One is their increasing support for the development of drones for the Philippine Coast Guard. We will also be pursuing more training opportunities to broaden the skills the Coast Guard would need,” said PCG Commandant, CG Admiral Ronnie Gil L Gavan. “We would also be increasing our person-to-person exchange to further deepen the relationship between Germany and the Philippine Coast Guard,” he continued.

He later confirmed that the PCG will utilize at least four more drones that Germany will donate to enhance the performance of its mandated functions.

“I’m delighted that we want to continue this cooperation in the coastal areas, not only with regards to additional drones but also when it comes to training and regional cooperation,” said Annalena Baerbock. “This strengthens maritime security and it strengthens the rules-based international order,” she added.

Through the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ) development agency, the PCG previously received two Quantum-Systems Trinity F90+ drones which it now uses for training.

The four additional drones that will be given by Germany are part of a EUR129 million assistance program for the Southeast Asian country. These drones will strengthen and expand the capabilities and operations of the Philippine Coast Guard in the West Philippine Sea including, but not limited to, illegal fishing monitoring and interceptions, disaster response and relief operations, and maritime aerial surveillance and mapping.
