HENSOLDT, a specialist in sensor technology, has been awarded a substantial contract by Rheinmetall Air Defence to supply SPEXER air defence radars. These radars will be utilised in the new Skyranger 30 anti-aircraft gun tank (FlakPz), with the contract valued at nearly 100 million euros.
The Skyranger 30 is set to replace the Gepard FlakPz in the Bundeswehr's air defence force. Equipped with the SPEXER 2000 radar, the Skyranger 30 will benefit from advanced detection capabilities, enabling precise target classification and tracking of moving or flying objects. The SPEXER 2000M 3D MkIII radar is included in a framework agreement made with Rheinmetall Air Defence in 2023 and is part of their offering to multiple end users.
The newly ordered radars will equip the Skyranger tanks in Germany and Austria, with Denmark also planning a similar procurement. The German Skyranger 30 is based on the GTK Boxer, incorporating the Stinger guided missile, while the Austrian system is based on the Pandur EVO, featuring both a 30 mm revolver cannon and the Mistral guided missile.
The SPEXER radar family provides high-performance surveillance for automatic detection and classification of ground, sea, and low-flying air targets. The SPEXER 2000 is used in various programs, including the German cUAS field camp (ASUL), qualified air defence, HoWiSM (high-energy laser for drone defence), and NNbS.
With extensive experience in radar systems for air defence, HENSOLDT continues to develop key technologies in this area. Their portfolio includes the TRML-4D high-performance radar, which has proven effective in Ukraine, the Twinvis passive radar, and systems for securing ship and air traffic. Both the TRML-4D and SPEXER are integral to the Bundeswehr's NNbS air defence system, commissioned in January.
