Spectra Group has secured a contract to supply the Irish Defence Force with Comtech’s Troposcatter Compact Over-the-Horizon Mobile Expeditionary Terminals (COMET). This procurement follows Spectra Group’s acquisition of global distribution rights for Comtech’s Troposcatter Family of Systems in February 2024, excluding the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
The Irish Defence Force has purchased several COMET systems, with additional units, training, and support planned. There is also interest in deploying Comtech’s Troposcatter on the Move (TOTM) enhancement.
Troposcatter technology enables high-bandwidth, low-latency communications by using the troposphere to transmit data, functioning independently of satellites and GPS. COMET, the smallest and lightest in the Troposcatter Family of Systems, is designed for rapid deployment and mobile operations. It delivers bandwidth of 5-60 Mbps and a range exceeding 70 km while operating on just 10 Watts of power. The system, which includes a 1-metre dish and Comtech’s CS67Plus modem, offers dual-frequency capabilities to mitigate signal fading and can be set up in under 15 minutes. It is packed in two 25 kg cases, making it portable and suitable for air transport.
