Volocopter announced on Thursday (Feb. 29) that the company has received an extension of its Production Organisation Approval (POA) from the German Federal Aviation Office (LBA) for the production of the VoloCity aircraft. This extension applies to Volocopter’s two new production and hangar facilities in Bruchsal, Germany, unveiled in April 2023.
Volocopter holds both Design Organisation Approval (DOA) and POA, making it the world’s first eVTOL company with both certifications. The POA extension, obtained through the acquisition of DG Flugzeugbau, specifically approves the production of an eVTOL in the POA’s scope of work, from prototyping to serial manufacturing.
Andreas Fehring, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Volocopter, commented, “This is a major milestone for us. Aircraft design and production are regulated for safety, and we are pleased that Volocopter’s production facility has received approval from LBA to manufacture commercial aircraft. Our team has proven that we can produce safe and high-quality test aircraft, and we look forward to shortening our production lead time for scaling.”
The VoloCity, under EASA’s SC-VTOL (Special Condition VTOL) Enhanced certification category, aims to become the first commercial eVTOL with high safety standards. Meeting these standards will enable VoloCity to fly quietly and efficiently above congested urban areas, offering an alternative mobility solution in cities.
