Defence Ties in Focus as U.S.-India INDUS-X Initiative Turns One

The India-U.S. Defense Acceleration Ecosystem (INDUS-X), launched by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) to promote defence industrial collaboration and innovation, has advanced the countries’ commitment to build a defence innovation bridge under the initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET).  The initiative was launched on June 21, 2023.

INDUS-X has strengthened private sector cooperation between the two countries by facilitating partnerships among defence technology companies, investors, and researchers. The third INDUS-X Summit will take place in Silicon Valley in September this year with a focus on harnessing private capital for defence innovation. The summit will be co-hosted by the U.S. India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) and Stanford University.

As part of the initiative, the two countries have established the INDUS-X Senior Leaders Forum (SLF) to engage with leaders from academia and the private sector,. A  Senior Advisory Group (SAG) has also been set up to assess all initiatives.  Over the last year, major U.S. defence suppliers such as Boeing and  General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (GA-ASI) have launched partnerships with Indian enterprises, including startups.

In February last year, GA-ASI announced three partnerships with Indian firms, The parnership with 114ai is to develop software and AI models for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) data processing, while that with Bharat Forge is for the manufacture and assembly of MQ-9 components in India. The company has also partnered with 3rdiTech in the field of semiconductors.

Boeing’s Liquid Robotic is partnering with Indian enterprises to build uncrewed surface vehicles (USV) and bolster maritime domain awareness. Skydio, a U.S.-based unmanned aerial system (UAS) manufacturer, and Indian firm Aeroarc are also partnering. INDUS-X offers a platform for the joint development of military products that are integral to the maritime security of the Indo-Pacific.
